In January, 1985 Railway Service Commissions was renamed as Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) conducts Non Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) exam. The exam is conducted to select candidates for Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) graduate and undergraduate posts in various Zonal Railways and Production Units of Indian Railways. The RRB NTPC exam is conducted in 15 languages. RRB NTPC examination is conducted for the posts of Junior Clerk cum Typist, Senior Time Keeper, Junior Account Assistant cum Typist, Goods Guard, Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Junior Time Keeper, Traffic Assistant, Trains Clerk, Senior Clerk Cum Typist, Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Commercial Apprentice and Station Master.

The different stages of RRB NTPC exam are 1st stage Computer Based Test (CBT), 2nd stage Computer Based Test (CBT), Typing skill Test/Computer Based Aptitude Test (as applicable) and document verification/medical examination. As per the RRB NTPC Notification for undergraduate posts, candidates should have passed class 12, and for graduate posts, the candidates should have cleared their graduation. As per RRB NTPC Notification 2020, the examination was conducted to fill approximately 35,000 vacancies. The popularity and demand for this examination is such that there were more than 1 crore applicants for the RRB NTPC examination.  

Taking into consideration the pattern of the RRB NTPC exam, the 1st stage CBT consists of 100 objective type multiple choice questions and the questions covers topics from Mathematics, General Awareness, General Intelligence, Reasoning. The exam is conducted online for 90 minutes, and the candidates will be assessed for 100 marks. Candidates will have to be careful while answering the questions since there will be negative marks for wrong answers. The next stage is the 2nd stage CBT. In this stage there will be 120 questions and the duration of this stage is for 90 minutes and there will be negative marking. The 2nd stage CBT comprises of three sections i.e. General Intelligence & Reasoning, Mathematics and General Awareness. The next stage is the CBAT and it comprises six test batteries and there will be no negative marking in this stage of the RRB NTPC exam. The next stage which is the Typing Skill test stage is a computer based test. In this test candidates should be able to type 30 Words per minute (WPM) in English language or 25 words per minute (WPM) in Hindi Language.

The syllabus of RRB NTPC Mathematics section is Time and Distance, Time and Work, Number system, Decimals, Fractions, LCM, HCF, Ratio and Proportions, Percentages, Mensuration etc. The General Awareness section will cover current events happening around the world. Reasoning and General Intelligence section will cover topics related to Completion of Numbers and Alphabetical Series, Coding & Decoding, Mathematical Operations, Similarities and Differences, Relationships, Analytical Reasoning, Data Sufficiency, Syllogism, Relationships.

RRB NTPC Notification will provide all the details such as fees for the examination, last date for application, admit card, application forms, dates of different stages of examination. RRB NTPC Notification will provide other details like eligibility criteria, age limit, upper limit of date of birth, lower limit of date of birth.

While appearing for the RRB NTPC examination, candidates will be required to use an RRB NTPC Admit card, any of the photo identification cards such as PAN Card, Passport, Aadhar Card, Driving License, identification card issued by college or university, photo identity card issued by employers. Candidates are required to reach the examination venue 1 hour before the commencement of the examination.
